FLY SAFE.

Ever wondered why cabin crew always ask you to fasten your seat belts, raise your window shades, put your seat back upright, stow your tray tables and foot rests blablablablabla upon take-off and landing?
And you have absolutely no answer to why you must do these?
All you know is - BECAUSE FOR SAFETY REASONS LOR.

I know, I know at times they may sound annoying because they just won't leave you alone until you do what has been instructed and you just want to enjoy the comfort of your seats. I also know that the sun is glaring into your face and you just want to shut that bloody window so you could catch another minute of rest. But, do you really think the stewardesses are not sick of telling you over & over again? Now, get to know what are the reasons behind these safety instructions (and be a nice passenger onboard from today onwards).

Yes, it is clearly stated across to you that these are the SAFETY instructions. And obviously, it's for your safety - not anyone else's. Because they don't want you to die in an event of emergency seriously.
Or rather, actually they don't care if you die or not - But your actions may hinder and cause other people including the cabin crew lives to be in danger too. So please, be considerate.

1) Stow your hand luggage / handbags in the overhead compartments or under the seat INFRONT of you. (As well as your iPads, loose items, tray tables and foot rests)

Because first, your life vest is located right below your seat.
Second, you don't want your bags to get in your way when you are running for your lives.
Third, so you will be able to be in the proper bracing positions.

Referring to the picture above - If your bag is on your lap, how are you supposed to hug your knees or cradle your heads properly during an emergency landing? You'll probably die panicking.

If your bags are in-between your legs or below your seats, how are you suppose to retrieve your life vests in the shortest time possible? I'm sure you don't wanna be 'trapping water' in the middle of some ocean without your life vests even if you are the World's best swimmer.

Or falling and tripping over bags, loose items on the floor or tray tables getting in your way while evacuating the aircraft. You will probably die earlier than you should; Or worst still, causing other people to die or hinder their safety because of you. Please, you want to die you die yourself. Don't be selfish.

So, stow your belongings properly when you are supposed to. I know, I know for some of you, your Chanels and Birkins and ohsobloodyexpensive that they cannot touch the floor. Then please, get something to support it or put it into a paper bag and stow it!
I'm pretty sure your lives worth much more than your bags right?

2) Put your seat back to upright position

FULLY UPRIGHT. Not 1/2 nor 3/4 up.
I know it is more comfortable to lay back down as much as possible of course. But seriously, we need your seats to be back upright during take-off and landing so that you and the passenger behind your seat is able to brace in the right position and escape from your seats as soon as possible in an emergency. It is also to minimize injuries during a crash and to maximize the amount of space for a quicker exit.

3) Raise your window shades fully

Many passengers do not understand the reason behind this safety rule upon take-off and landing and it is just so annoying when the sun is glaring in your face.
Why must we put the window shades up???!!

Simply because it will help us to assess any exterior hazards (such as fire) during an evacuation and allow light from outside into the cabin when the aircraft power is off. Rescuers will be able to assess situation inside the aircraft too. Also, it is to allow passengers and crew to spot any engine fire or unnatural happenings outside the aircraft and notify the pilots as soon as possible.

4) Switch off ALL your electronic devices / Put them on airplane mode

The reason behind this is always announced on the plane but many people choose to ignore it anyway. I know you may think it is no big deal and your one phone will not affect much to the navigational system. But then what if all 300 passengers think the same way as you do?
Later you ended up in Mars instead of London then you know.

I know it is hard to live without your phone after a 13 hours flight and you just want to send a text to your love ones. But seriously it won't kill just to wait another few minutes.
So keep calm and be patient okay?

6) Let the cabin crew collect your headphones / Remove your earpiece and headphones

http://travel.ninemsn.com.au/img/blog/blog120213_flight.jpg

Sometimes you are in the midst of your movie and you just want to finish it. But the stupid  announcement have to come on to ask you remove all headphones and return it to the stewardess.
JUST DO IT. You can always continue your movie another time.

In times of an unplanned emergency landing, cabin crew will be shouting emergency commands for you to follow. If you have your headphones on, it will hinder your hearing and you will not be able to follow the instructions given. Furthermore, the dangling wires of your headphones may cause passengers or crew to trip and fall causing even more unnecessary injuries during evacuation.

Do you seriously still want to watch your movie while everyone is already panicking and in their bracing positions or already running for their lives? Just sit back relax and rest your ears.

7) Fasten your seat belts whenever the seat belt sign comes on AND DO NOT STAND UP ANYMORE until it goes off!

This is one very important and common instruction onboard. Yet, many choose to ignore it too.
During take-off, turbulence and landing, you MUST make sure you fasten your seat belts and remain seated. No children should be unfastened nor babies to be left in the bassinets.

You never know when the aircraft will take an emergency brake nor how bad the turbulence is going to be. Sometimes the seatbelt sign may be turned on for too long and you don't feel any signs of turbulence. But I believe the pilots know better than anyone of us do & it is important for you to adhere to the seatbelt sign until it goes off.

I'm sure you don't want to see flying babies nor human beings thrown everywhere right?

Not cool at all.
PLEASE JUST SIT DOWN AND BE PATIENT.

x

Like most to you, I never knew what was the reasons behind all these safety instructions and I just followed blindly. Until I joined the airlines, I was taught how important these safety procedures are. Some people may still think it is rather ridiculous or unimportant to follow, but ultimately it is to ensure your personal safety as much as possible during that few hours flight.

http://www.marthastewardess.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Airline-Stewardess_youre-driving-me-nuts_thumb.jpg

Yes it can be REALLY annoying when a passenger does not adhere to rules and instructions given by cabin crew and made a big fuss out of nothing. And worst thing is we still have to maintain our composure and still smile and pretend like we're goddamn patient. Can't these passengers just listen and behave for their good 10 minutes?!

They just don't understand the importance of these safety measures imposed by the airlines & I thought this can be a good chance to educate more travelers about safety onboard since I was given the chance to learn when I joined the airlines 3 years back. I hope more people would understand the reasons behind those regulations now and be a nice passenger from today onwards.

Don't make life difficult for the cabin crew;
It is only their responsibility to ensure your safety onboard.
Travel safe always, x

P/S: Of course, there are many many other safety rules onboard - You can leave a comment and I will tell you the reason behind them if I know the answer! :)

(This post is typed base on what I know and remembered - Fellow ex-colleagues please feel free to correct me or fill in anymore important details that I've left out! Cheers!)
